The city of Chicago and the broader medical community are mourning the loss of a true pioneer in ophthalmology, Dr. Randy J. Epstein, who peacefully passed away at his Chicago home on May 22, 2025, at age 70. His life’s work, marked by groundbreaking research, exceptional patient care, and a deep commitment to his family, leaves a lasting legacy.
Born on January 8, 1955, Dr. Epstein’s journey began in West Rogers Park, Chicago. Demonstrating early promise and a passion for science and medicine, he pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. His dedication to excellence guided him through medical school at Rush Medical College, where he earned his MD and discovered his calling in ophthalmology.
Following his residency at Rush, Dr. Epstein sought further specialization at Emory University, completing a highly competitive two-year HEED cornea fellowship. His training prepared him to become a leader in the field of corneal disease and transplantation. Returning to Chicago, he dedicated himself to academic medicine at Rush University, where he served as a professor of ophthalmology. His innovative work and compassionate approach earned him recognition as one of Chicago’s “Top Doctors” multiple times and garnered prestigious awards, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Senior Achievement Award and the NIH/National Eye Institute’s Research Service Award.
In addition to his clinical achievements, Dr. Epstein was a founding partner of Chicago Cornea Consultants, an internationally renowned practice that attracted patients worldwide seeking expert care in corneal transplantation and disease management. His leadership and contributions to medical research elevated standards within the profession and provided hope to countless patients.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Randy’s heart was rooted in his family. He was married to Dr. Linda S. Katz, with whom he shared a life filled with shared adventures and mutual love. He was a loving father to Dr. Rachel (Dr. David Chan) Epstein, Sarah (Thomas) Sitz, and Joshua (Natalie) Epstein, and a proud grandfather to Miller, Reese, Owen, Logan, and Harper. His family was his anchor, and he prioritized quality time with them above all else.
An avid sports enthusiast, Randy enjoyed golfing, skiing, scuba diving, and running marathons—having completed over ten. His adventurous spirit and zest for life inspired those around him, exemplifying the importance of pursuing passions and embracing challenges.
A memorial service to honor his life will be held on Sunday, May 25, at 1 p.m. at Chicago Jewish Funerals, 8851 Skokie Blvd, Skokie, IL. Following the service, interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. The Shiva will be observed at the family’s residence, beginning after the burial and continuing Monday from noon to 8 p.m., at 8844 Meade, Morton Grove, IL.
